PSA On-site Carbine & Shotgun Training

By Ron Avery

Back in late May, I had the opportunity to hold an advanced Carbine and Shotgun course for a group of private security trainers at our onsite facility at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, NM.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience for all! We shot carbines and shotguns in defensive situations, did some force on force and shot the carbines out to 400 yards on a variety of steel targets. Our Larue targets worked well, coming back up again time after time after being hit.

The force on force training was an eye opener for the trainers! All too often, people get used to the “bad guy” doing the expected thing and being taken care of by the “good guys” who should always win.

NOT SO!  Trainers learned that aggressive  bad guys can win if they don’t have their act together! Being able to shoot doesn’t mean you are a good fighter or critical thinker under pressure!

Staying calm, reading the situation and being ready to respond to fleeting opportunities as well as proactive tactics and expert, applicable marksmanship and proper gunhandling brought success.

As a bonus part of the shotgun portion of training, I ran the guys through the world class shotgun facility on-site for rounds of trap, skeet and sporting clays for a portion of each day. Here, they were able to run their defensive shotguns from tactical positions on moving targets in a variety of simulations and make hits! They loved it and it was good to see them responding well while having fun training.

We will be doing more carbine and shotgun training on-site later this year. Stay tuned!
