History

Founded in 1989, The Practical Shooting Academy, Inc. is a true, multi- purpose training institution designed to teach the multiple roles of Practical Shooting.

Many people associate the term “practical shooting” with the modern IPSC competitive shooting. The term “practical shooting” was actually first coined by Ed McGivern, who was a famous demonstration shooter for Smith and Wesson back in the 30′s.

Ed McGivern coined the term in his book, fast and fancy revolver shooting, to reflect the defensive side of handgunning as opposed to the more formal target shooting of the day. He taught law enforcement personnel how to shoot and was one of the most phenomenal shooters the world has ever known.

Col. Jeff Cooper started the International Practical Shooting Confederation in the late 70′s as a competition to research and test defensive shooting skills, defensive weapons and mindset and take the lessons learned from that, along with other tactical training to create modern tactical training.

The sport of Practical Shooting, as it was called, quickly evolved into a worldwide event practiced in many countries. The skills practiced there became the benchmark for reactive shooting skills and were adapted into all modern shooting schools.

Our Academy embraces the Jeff Cooper’s original intent for practical shooting as well as the modern competitive/sporting side of shooting.

This dual role makes our Academy unique and resonates with the greatest cross section of American shooters.

The skills we teach have embedded themselves into modern tactical firearms training and has totally changed the way progressive practitioners train and fight.

Since our beginning in 1989, We have taught thousands of instructors, special operations military and law enforcement, police officers, government agencies and civilians from all walks of life. Many have had to use the skills we have taught in deadly force situations.

We have also taught many competitive shooters, hunters and recreational shooters out there and continue to fulfill a dual role.

We are proud to be a part of the change process and look forward to working with you!
